"The gods are fallen and all safety gone. And there is one sure thing about the fall of gods: they do not fall a little; they crash and shatter or sink deeply into green muck. It is a tedious job to build them up again; they never quite shine."  —John Steinbeck, East of Eden

There was a time when a woman like Cersei would have been called possessed by the devil. She would have been exorcised to cast out the evil spirit, and if after many trials that did not work, she would have been burned as a witch for the good of the community. The one thing that may not be forgiven a witch is her ability to distress people, to make them restless and uneasy and even envious.
At seventeen, sitting in the front pew, Cersei held her twin brother’s hand as the reverend looked pointedly at her and asked, “Are monsters born in the world to human parents? If a twisted gene or a malformed egg can produce physical monsters, may not the same process produce a malformed soul?” The reverend thought himself an educated man; he did not understand. Jaime will go to Stanford and join the army and travel the world, and I will smile and fill my dance card and drink punch. He is father’s heir and I am to be sold to some stranger. Her grip tightened painfully, nails digging into flesh, but Jaime did not pull away. That would not come until later.
"You look as innocent as an angel," the same reverend whispered as he placed her hand in Robert Baratheon’s the following spring. Cersei beamed. I fucked Jaime this morning. Her smile died when she saw the look on Jaime’s face….

"Galladon drowned when I was four and he was eight, though, and Alysanne and Arianne died still in the cradle. I am the only child the gods let him keep. The freakish one, not fit to be a son or daughter." (A Feast for Crows, Brienne VI)

No. Dany shivered. No, no, oh no.  “Are you deaf, fool?” Reznak mo Reznak demanded of the man. “Did you not hear my pronouncement? See my factors on the morrow, and you shall be paid for your sheep.”  “Reznak,” Ser Barristan said quietly, “hold your tongue and open your eyes. Those are no sheep bones. No, Dany thought, those are the bones of a child.

Even after all these years, Ser Barristan could still recall Ashara’s smile, the sound of her laughter. He had only to close his eyes to see her, with her long dark hair tumbling about her shoulders and those haunting purple eyes.
